A thick, spreadable cream cheese frosting perfect for sugar cookies, balancing tangy cream cheese with sweet powdered sugar and a hint of vanilla for a luscious texture that clings without sliding.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened (full-fat recommended)
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 to cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt
  • Optional: 1-2 teaspoons heavy cream or milk (to adjust spreadability)
  • Optional: Lemon zest (for citrus twist)
  • Optional: Almond extract (for nutty flavor instead of vanilla)

Instructions

  1. Soften the cream cheese and butter by leaving them out of the fridge for about 30 minutes until soft but not melted.
  2. In a mixing bowl, beat the cream cheese and butter together on medium speed with an electric mixer until creamy and smooth, about 2-3 minutes.
  3. Gradually add powdered sugar, about half a cup at a time, beating on low speed after each addition to avoid a sugar cloud, then increase to medium speed to fully blend.
  4. Add vanilla extract and a pinch of salt, mixing on medium speed until the frosting is glossy and thick.
  5. If the frosting is too thick to spread, add 1 teaspoon of heavy cream or milk at a time and mix until desired spreadable consistency is reached.
  6. Test the frosting by spreading on a sugar cookie; if too runny, add more powdered sugar, if too stiff, add a splash more cream.
  7. If not using immediately, cover and refrigerate for up to 24 hours. Bring to room temperature and whip briefly before using.

Notes

Keep cream cheese and butter at room temperature for smooth mixing. Add powdered sugar gradually to avoid grainy texture. If frosting becomes runny, chill for 15-20 minutes to firm up. Dip spatula in hot water before spreading for smoother application.
