A stunning, easy-to-make Halloween sangria featuring blood oranges, red wine, and a hint of cinnamon. Perfect for parties, it’s a show-stopping drink that’s secretly simple to throw together.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 (750 ml) bottle of fruity red wine (Pinot Noir or Zinfandel recommended)
  • 1/2 cup (120 ml) blood orange juice (fresh-squeezed from about 34 blood oranges)
  • 1/4 cup (60 ml) orange liqueur (Triple Sec or Cointreau)
  • 1/4 cup (50 g) granulated sugar
  • 2 blood oranges, thinly sliced into rounds
  • 1 navel orange, thinly sliced
  • 1/2 cup (about 75 g) fresh or frozen cranberries (optional)
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1 cup (240 ml) ginger ale or sparkling water
  • Ice cubes
  • Fresh rosemary sprigs (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Wash the blood oranges and navel orange thoroughly. Using a sharp knife, slice them into thin rounds, about 1/4-inch thick. Rinse the cranberries if using.
  2. Cut 3-4 blood oranges in half and juice them until you have 1/2 cup (120 ml) of fresh juice. Strain out any seeds.
  3. In a large pitcher, add the sliced blood oranges, sliced navel orange, cranberries (if using), and the cinnamon stick. Pour in the blood orange juice.
  4. Pour in the bottle of red wine and the orange liqueur. Add the sugar. Stir gently with a wooden spoon until the sugar is mostly dissolved.
  5. Cover the pitcher and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, preferably 4-6 hours or overnight.
  6. Just before serving, remove the cinnamon stick. Pour in the ginger ale or sparkling water and stir very gently.
  7. Fill wine glasses or mason jars with ice cubes. Pour the sangria over the ice, making sure to include some fruit slices in each glass.
  8. Garnish each glass with a small sprig of fresh rosemary. Serve immediately.

Notes

For best flavor, chill the sangria overnight. Adjust sweetness to taste by adding more sugar if needed. If blood oranges are unavailable, use regular orange juice with a splash of pomegranate juice. For a non-alcoholic version, substitute red wine with non-alcoholic red wine or grape/pomegranate juice blend, and omit the orange liqueur.
