This cozy apple cider sangria with cinnamon sticks is a simple, honest drink that tastes like the best part of autumn. It’s made with crisp white wine, apple cider, and warm spices, and it’s perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 bottle (750 ml) dry white wine (Pinot Grigio or Sauvignon Blanc)
  • 2 cups (480 ml) unfiltered apple cider
  • 1/2 cup (120 ml) apple brandy or bourbon (optional)
  • 1 large Honeycrisp or Fuji apple, cored and thinly sliced
  • 1 large orange, thinly sliced
  • 45 cinnamon sticks
  • 23 tablespoons pure maple syrup or honey, to taste
  • 1 cup (240 ml) sparkling water or ginger ale, for serving
  • Ice, for serving
  • Optional garnishes: fresh rosemary sprigs, star anise, or additional apple slices

Instructions

  1. Prep the fruit. Core the apple and slice it into thin rounds or half-moons. Thinly slice the orange into rounds. Leave the peels on both fruits.
  2. Combine the liquids. In a large pitcher, pour the entire bottle of white wine. Add the apple cider and the apple brandy (if using). Stir gently to combine.
  3. Add the fruit and spices. Gently drop in the apple slices, orange slices, and cinnamon sticks. Use a spoon to push them down into the liquid so they’re mostly submerged.
  4. Sweeten to taste. Add 2 tablespoons of maple syrup or honey. Stir well to dissolve. Taste and add more sweetener if needed.
  5. Chill and wait. Cover the pitcher and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, preferably overnight.
  6. Serve. Fill glasses about halfway with ice. Give the sangria a gentle stir. Pour into glasses, making sure to get some fruit and a cinnamon stick into each glass. Top each glass with a splash of sparkling water or ginger ale if using.
  7. Garnish and enjoy. Add a fresh rosemary sprig or a star anise to each glass. Serve immediately.

Notes

For best results, chill the sangria overnight to allow flavors to meld. The fruit will continue to soften and infuse the liquid. If making ahead, add fresh apple slices before serving for the best visual appeal. For a non-alcoholic version, omit the wine and brandy and use 3 cups of apple cider plus 1 cup of sparkling apple cider.
