Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 can (15 oz / 425 g) chickpeas, drained and rinsed
  • 1 cup (about 150 g) roasted red peppers, drained if jarred
  • 1/4 cup chopped banana peppers, pickled or fresh
  • 1/4 cup (60 ml) tahini
  • 3 tablespoons (45 ml) olive oil, plus extra for drizzling
  • 2 tablespoons (30 ml) fresh lemon juice
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt, or to taste
  • 23 tablespoons (3045 ml) water or aquafaba

Instructions

  1. Prepare Your Ingredients (5 minutes): Drain and rinse the canned chickpeas thoroughly. Optionally peel some chickpeas for extra creaminess. Drain roasted red peppers and roughly chop banana peppers.
  2. Blend the Base (3-4 minutes): In a food processor, combine chickpeas, roasted red peppers, banana peppers, tahini, garlic, lemon juice, cumin, and salt. Pulse a few times to start breaking everything down.
  3. Add Olive Oil and Liquids (2 minutes): With the processor running, slowly drizzle in olive oil. Add water or aquafaba one tablespoon at a time until creamy and spreadable. Scrape down sides as needed.
  4. Taste and Adjust (1-2 minutes): Taste the hummus and add more salt, lemon juice, or banana peppers if desired. Blend briefly to incorporate.
  5. Transfer and Chill (optional): Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to let flavors meld.
  6. Serve and Garnish: Drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with smoked paprika or chopped fresh parsley if desired.

Notes

Peeling chickpeas improves texture for a silkier hummus. Roasting fresh red peppers adds smoky depth. Use aquafaba for extra creaminess without watering down. Adjust banana peppers to control heat. Chill for at least 30 minutes for best flavor. Avoid freezing to maintain creamy texture.
