A fun, festive, and budget-friendly black bean dip shaped like a spider web, perfect for Halloween parties or any fall gathering. This creamy, smoky dip is a crowd-pleaser that even picky eaters will love.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cans (15 oz each) black beans, drained and rinsed
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • ½ teaspoon smoked paprika
  • ½ teaspoon salt (or to taste)
  • 2 tablespoons lime juice (fresh)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 cup sour cream (full-fat, cold)
  • Optional: chopped fresh cilantro, sliced black olives (for spiders), hot sauce

Instructions

  1. Prep Your Beans: Open both cans of black beans and pour them into a colander. Rinse thoroughly under cold water until the foam subsides. Let them drain for a minute.
  2. Sauté the Aromatics: In a small pan over medium heat, add 2 tablespoons of olive oil. Once it shimmers, add the minced garlic. Cook for just 30 seconds until fragrant. Add the cumin, chili powder, and smoked paprika. Stir for another 15 seconds until the spices bloom.
  3. Blend the Base: Transfer the rinsed black beans to a food processor. Add the sautéed spice mixture, lime juice, and ½ teaspoon of salt. Pulse a few times to break up the beans, then let the machine run for a full minute. Scrape down the sides with a spatula.
  4. Adjust the Consistency: With the food processor running, add 1-2 tablespoons of water (or reserved bean liquid) through the feed tube. Blend until smooth and scoopable, like thick hummus. Adjust salt or lime juice to taste.
  5. Create the Base Layer: Spoon the black bean dip onto a serving platter or pie plate. Use the back of a spoon or spatula to spread it into an even, smooth circle, about ½ to ¾ inch thick.
  6. Make the Spider Web: Spoon 1 cup of cold sour cream into a small Ziploc bag. Seal the bag, then snip off a tiny corner (about ⅛ inch). Starting from the center of the dip, pipe a small circle of sour cream. Then, pipe larger concentric circles around it, leaving ½-inch gaps, until you reach the edge of the dip (4-5 circles total).
  7. Create the Web Lines: Take a toothpick or wooden skewer. Starting from the center, drag the toothpick straight outwards through the sour cream circles to the edge of the dip. Wipe the toothpick clean, then repeat from the center, moving about an inch to the side. Continue all the way around the dip to create a web pattern.
  8. Garnish and Serve: Place sliced black olives (as spiders) on the web. Sprinkle with fresh cilantro if desired. Serve immediately with tortilla chips, carrot sticks, or bell pepper slices.

Notes

For best results, use cold sour cream for piping. The toothpick trick works best with quick, confident motions. The dip can be served cold, at room temperature, or slightly warm. Make the black bean base up to 2 days ahead and add the sour cream web just before serving.
