Ingredients

Scale
  • 810 cups strong brewed coffee (dark roast preferred)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar (or to taste)
  • 1/4 cup warm water
  • 1/2 teaspoon butterfly pea flower powder or 3 drops purple food gel
  • 1/4 cup caramel sauce
  • 1/4 cup black sanding sugar
  • 1/4 cup white sanding sugar
  • Whipped cream (homemade or canned)
  • Chocolate syrup
  • Gummy worms
  • Chocolate spiders
  • Caramel popcorn
  • Cinnamon sticks
  • Star anise
  • Pretzel sticks (broken into pieces)
  • Edible glitter or luster dust
  • Whole milk or milk alternative (optional)
  • Lemon juice (optional, for color change)
  • Butterfly pea flower tea bags (optional, 2 bags steeped in 1/2 cup hot water for 5 minutes)

Instructions

  1. Brew 8-10 cups of strong coffee. While hot, stir in vanilla extract and sugar. Let cool slightly.
  2. In a small bowl, mix warm water with butterfly pea flower powder or purple food gel until dissolved. Set aside as color concentrate.
  3. Pour caramel sauce into a shallow dish. In another dish, mix black and white sanding sugar. Dip mug rims into caramel, then into sugar. Let set for 5 minutes.
  4. Arrange garnishes in small bowls: gummy worms, chocolate spiders, caramel popcorn, cinnamon sticks, star anise, pretzel sticks.
  5. Set up the bar: place coffee carafe, color concentrate, rimmed mugs, garnishes, whipped cream, and chocolate syrup in order.
  6. Instruct guests: fill mug 3/4 full with coffee, add 1 tablespoon color concentrate and stir, add milk if desired, top with whipped cream, drizzle chocolate syrup in a spiral and drag a toothpick through to create a spiderweb, add garnishes, and sprinkle with edible glitter.

Notes

Let caramel set on mug rims for at least 5 minutes before adding coffee to prevent melting. Use clear glass mugs for best visual effect. Keep coffee warm, not hot, to avoid melting whipped cream. Pre-make purple concentrate for dramatic effect. Use a tray to contain spills.
