Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (125g / 4.4 oz) all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup (50g / 1.75 oz) unsweetened cocoa powder (Dutch-processed recommended)
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup (150g / 5.3 oz) granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup (120ml / 4 fl oz) whole milk or plant-based milk
  • 1/3 cup (80ml / 2.7 fl oz) vegetable oil
  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup (120ml / 4 fl oz) boiling water
  • 1 cup (230g / 8 oz) unsalted butter, softened
  • 34 cups (360-480g / 12.717 oz) powdered sugar, sifted
  • 1/2 cup (45g / 1.6 oz) unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 tablespoons heavy cream or full-fat coconut milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon black gel food coloring or activated charcoal powder
  • Pinch of salt
  • Mini chocolate cones or homemade chocolate hats
  • Black licorice strips or thin black fondant ribbons
  • Edible glitter or sprinkles (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a 12-cup muffin tin with cupcake liners.
  2. In a large bowl, sift together flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk sugar, milk, vegetable oil, egg, and vanilla extract until combined.
  4. Gradually add dry ingredients to wet ingredients, stirring gently until just combined. Do not overmix.
  5. Carefully stir in boiling water; batter will be thin.
  6. Pour batter evenly into cupcake liners, filling about 2/3 full.
  7. Bake for 18-20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  8. Transfer cupcakes to a cooling rack and cool completely before frosting.
  9. To make frosting, beat softened butter until creamy (about 2 minutes).
  10. Gradually add powdered sugar and cocoa powder, beating on low speed.
  11. Add heavy cream, vanilla extract, black food coloring, and salt; increase speed and beat until fluffy (3-4 minutes). Adjust consistency with more powdered sugar or cream as needed.
  12. Pipe or spread frosting onto cooled cupcakes.
  13. Top each cupcake with chocolate witch hats, securing with a dab of frosting.
  14. Add licorice ribbons around the base of the hats and optional edible glitter or sprinkles.

Notes

Use softened but not melted butter for frosting to achieve perfect creamy texture. Sift dry ingredients to avoid lumps. Adding boiling water thins batter and intensifies chocolate flavor, keeping cupcakes moist. Chill cupcakes before frosting if kitchen is warm to help frosting hold shape. Black gel food coloring is preferred over liquid to avoid thinning frosting; activated charcoal is a natural alternative but may slightly alter flavor. Cupcakes can be frozen unfrosted for up to 2 months; thaw completely before frosting.
