A quick and easy Halloween appetizer featuring brie cheese wrapped in light crescent rolls and string cheese ‘bandages’ to look like a mummy. Ready in under 20 minutes, it’s a crowd-pleasing, fun, and delicious dish perfect for parties.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 wheel of brie cheese (about 8 ounces)
  • 1 can of light crescent rolls (8-count)
  • 46 light string cheese sticks
  • 2 tablespoons of raspberry jam
  • 2 whole cloves or black olive slices (for mummy eyes)
  • 1 egg wash (1 egg beaten with 1 tablespoon of water)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Remove the brie from the refrigerator about 10 minutes before starting. Using a sharp knife, carefully trim the top rind off the brie wheel, leaving the bottom rind intact.
  3. Open the can of crescent rolls and separate the dough into triangles. On a lightly floured surface, use a rolling pin to gently flatten each triangle until it’s about 1/4 inch thick.
  4. Arrange the flattened crescent triangles in a star pattern, overlapping the wide ends slightly in the center. Place the brie wheel (rind-side down) in the center of the dough star. Spoon 1-2 tablespoons of raspberry jam onto the top of the brie.
  5. Fold the points of the crescent triangles up and over the brie, pressing the edges together gently to seal. Make sure the brie is completely enclosed in dough.
  6. Take the light string cheese sticks and carefully tear them into thin strips, about 1/4 inch wide. Lay the strips across the dough-covered brie in a crisscross pattern, leaving a small gap near the top for the ‘eyes.’ Press the strips gently into the dough.
  7. Place two whole cloves or small olive slices in the gap near the top for the mummy’s eyes. Push them in gently.
  8. In a small bowl, beat the egg with 1 tablespoon of water. Using a pastry brush, gently brush the egg wash over the entire surface of the dough and the string cheese strips.
  9. Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 12-15 minutes, until the dough is golden brown and the cheese is melted and bubbly. If the top is browning too quickly, tent loosely with foil for the last 3 minutes.
  10. Remove from the oven and let it rest on the baking sheet for 5 minutes. Transfer carefully to a serving board or plate. Serve warm with crackers, sliced baguette, or apple slices.

Notes

Let the brie rest at room temperature for 10 minutes before starting. Always trim the top rind to avoid a rubbery texture. Let the baked brie rest for 5 minutes before serving to prevent the cheese from flooding the platter. For a gluten-free version, use gluten-free crescent roll dough or puff pastry. For a dairy-free version, use dairy-free soft cheese and omit string cheese.
