  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup white icing (store-bought or homemade buttercream)
  • Optional: Black gel icing for spider decoration

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, cream the softened butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar together until light and fluffy, about 3-4 minutes.
  3. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then add the vanilla extract and beat for another 30 seconds.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing on low speed just until combined. Do not overmix.
  6. Fold in the chocolate chips with a spatula.
  7. Chill the dough for 30 minutes if time allows (optional but recommended).
  8. Scoop rounded balls of dough (about 1.5 tablespoons each) onto the prepared baking sheets, spacing them 2 inches apart.
  9. Bake for 9-11 minutes, until edges are golden brown and centers look slightly underdone.
  10. Let cookies cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  11. Once completely cool, prepare the icing. Pipe a small circle in the center of each cookie, then pipe concentric circles around it, spacing them about 1/2 inch apart.
  12. Use a toothpick to drag lines from the center outward through all the circles, creating a web pattern. Repeat 6-8 times around the cookie.
  13. Optional: Pipe a small spider using black gel icing.
  14. Let the icing set for 15-20 minutes before serving or storing.

Notes

For best results, chill the dough for 30 minutes to prevent spreading. Do not overbake; cookies should look slightly underdone when removed from the oven. Let cookies cool completely before decorating to prevent icing from melting. If icing is too thin, refrigerate for 10 minutes to firm up.
